Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: I am a diabetic and I take Lantus 15 units morning and 14 units at night. I also use humolog 8 units at each meal. I ate late tonight 9:00 pm and took my humolog as prescribed with my meal. When I went to go to bed instead of my 14 units of Lantus, I mistakenly took 14 units of humolog. Is there anything I should do about this, will it harm me in any way?

Brief Answer:
Eat some amount of sugar immediately. Be alert.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your query and understood your concern.

Sir, Humolog is a meal time rapid acting insulin. Where as lantus is long acting. Since you have taken extra dose, I am worried that you will have hypoglycemia. I would suggest you take some amount sugar to prevent low sugar levels. Don't take the missed lantus dose for today.

If you cannot visit the ER for regular blood sugar monitoring, I recommend you to be alert and notify as and when you feel dizziness, sweating palpitations and severe weakness. Try to keep glucose biscuits or plain sugar with you. You may ask your family members to keep watch on you for the next 10 - 12 hours.

You need to get your blood sugar recorded after 12 hours and plan the next dose of insulin. Based on my experience, I don't think there would be a drastic change. But a sugar check before the next insulin dose is needed.

ER visit if possible will be very appropriate.

Hope this guides you. For any other queries you can write to us. we will be happy to help you. Thank you.
