Posted on Wed, 23 Apr 2014
Question: Hi, My Mom (aged 52 years) is suffering from Chronic Hepatitis-B. It was diagnosed in the Year 2007. Since, then she has been under treatment . She has been taking Adesera Tablet. The virus count went down gradually. But, when she had to undergo Hepatitis Be Panel Serum test again (please see attached) in 2013, the Virus count has gone Up. Hence, the Doctor (Gastroenterology) has prescribed Entehep (entecavir) tablet. Dosage is One tablet everyday. My Mom is not experiencing any Symptoms of Disease. She is perfectly healthy. Kindly advise if the Treatment/Medicines she is taking is appropriate. If not, please suggest medication.

Brief Answer: Keep following with GI/infecious disease specialis Detailed Answer: Hi, I have gone through the medical history of your mother and feel sorry for the situation she is in. I have also gone through her lab reports carefully and noticed that she is experiencing re-activation of the viral infection. Although the virus count has gone up, fortunately she is not having any symptom due to being under treatment. However, as this treatment is not stopping the replication of the virus (most probably due to resistance), then, her GI specialist has decided to change anti-viral drug (shifted to Entehep). I highly suggest to continue medication as prescribed by her GI and to repeat lab tests as directed by her GI specialist. A further consultation with infectious disease specialist is also recommended for further evaluation and treatment. Hope it helped! Let me know if you need further assistance! Wishing fast recovery to your mom! Dr.Albana

Hi Dr. Albana, Thank you for the prompt reply and suggestions. Please advise if My MOM has to follow any Diet Routine that may help her to fight the Virus. My Mom is a Vegetarian since her childhood ( No Egg, No Meat, No Chicken, No Fish). She only takes Vegetables/Fruits/Dairy food/ Pulses. So kindly advise if she has to refrain from consuming any food items Or if any food that you recommend. regards, XXXX

Brief Answer: Her current diet is perfect... Detailed Answer: Hi back XXXXXXX Thank you for following up and for caring about your mom. The main principle of following a diet for hepatitis B is "Consuming low fat, moderate protein and high carbohydrate diet". This is for the sake of not putting too much stress to the liver (which is already suffering of hepatitis B damages). Please bare in mind that the liver is the main organ where the body nutrients are being metabolized. The diet that your mother is following contains the right foods for her chronic hepatitis B. Be careful when cooking foods, avoid too much oil or fat. I usually recommend using 1 teaspoon of olive oil early in the morning together with 1 teaspoon of honey to protect her liver. I would also recommend herbal remedies like black seed oil. As the diet contains high carbohydrates, I advise to keep her blood sugar level monitored to prevent diabetes onset. A small number of my patients have shown early signs of diabetes when following such diet. Wishing good luck to your mom! Dr.Albana p.s. If you have further concerns, do not hesitate to write me back! I'd be honored to assist you further!
