Question: this morning I went to a walk in clinic due to wheezing and shortness of breath. I have copd and emphezema. My Sats were 93. I was given a breathing treatment and steroid shot. Felt much better when I left. When reading the clinic papers I noticed Bronchitis and Exacerbation Flare up Acute. I am not 7 hours later and sats have return to 93 and not wanting a flare up or knowledge of WHEN to go to ER I need advice. I had an Exacerbation last December for the first time and was hospitalized for 2 days. I do not smoke but did for 30 years. Quit for 8 years and smoke for 6 months and land me with a flare up. They want to Intubate (SP) me and I said no. They place a CPAP machine for 4 hours until I could breathe. I am scared I will go to sleep tonight and wake in a flare up or not wake at all. Can you advise me?

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your query. I think I would be able to help you.
The point is to answer your query you need to understand the situation.
COPD that includes bronchitis and emphysema is a condition where the Lungs are burnt out possibly as a result of the excess smoking.
When the lungs burn , it is basically the cells there that die.
In lungs there are 2 basic cells - 1 cells that lubricate breathing movement. 2. cells that fight infection.

So I'm any condition where these 2 functions are needed your lungs are inadequate. Therefore, the lungs get into stress that's called exacerbation.
the conditions that can cause exacerbation are infections including minor infections like cough and cold. and environmental factors like pollution and dust and allergic agents.

so you need to avoid these conditions.
and take your regular inhalers and tablets regularly.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
