Suggest Treatment For Barrett’s Esophagus

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Dec 2016
Question: I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy on Monday and found out that the doctor suspected Barretts disease. I was extremely extremely extremely stressed out about it but luckily the biopsy is negative yesterday. Over the past 5 days I was petrfied about the possiblity of having Barrett's Esophagus diseases. I cried and feeling anxious, depressed and hopeless about this whole situation. Several nights I did not get any slept at all.

I was completely sedated during the procedure. Now I can't have an erection while masturbation. My question is can colonoscopy cause total erectile dysfunction???

I don’t think they put a catheter in my penis during the colonoscopy. I had sex with my girlfriend last Saturday, two days before the colonoscopy. Everything was fine. I just turned 43. Normally I get morning erections regularly but 3 to 4 days after the procedure I didn't noticed any morning/night erections. I tried to masturbate (to test if I can) but I can't have an erection. Finally LAST NIGHT I did have erections couple of times but it was not as hard as before. My mind is still so fixated on not have erection.

I am so scared that I am permanently damaged by the procedure. There are not much online about this two issues. The impression I got was that erectile dysfunction is not cause by colonoscopy. I asked the doctor who did the procedure and he told me it's not the colonoscopy. I also talk to another doctor in the same office and he said he had not seen that in his 40 years. The GI doctor did tell me that some men can get erection and ejacuation during the colonosocpy because prostate is somehow being stimualated. I also ask a cardiologist friend of mine and he also said no. I am just afraid the procedure some how damage the prostate and the nerves in the anus and cause erectile dysfunction. Have you seen or even heard of permanent erection problems after colonoscopy? I am still terrified of this.

I need second opinion!!!

please help!

Brief Answer:
I do not think it is colonoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Health care magic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

I endorse the opinion of your doctor and other doctors in office that colonoscopy do not cause any erectile dysfunction. I have seen hundreds of the patients undergoing colonoscopy and counselled them before the procedure to make them at ease. Fortunately none of my patient or other patients referred for ED to me ever correlated colonoscopy with erectile dysfunction. In other words I never heard of colonoscopy causing ED.

I am of the opinion that the perceived ED is not due to colonoscopy.

I have another observation which will probably put you on ease. Being a psychiatrist I see more patients with stress related issues and I think it is possible that stress of procedure or diagnosis of barrettes oesophagus could be a cause. I understand that often morning erections are spared in stress related ED but please note that you have have extreme stress the morning erections may not be present.

The positive side of this observation is complete recovery. It is very likely that in next few days you will observe the erections of similar intensity without any problem.

I hope this helps you.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

I did have an erection a couple of times on Friday night/Saturday morning but it was not as strong. But Sunday or Monday morning I did not noticed erection. I keep waking up at night to see if I have erection or not. If I don't I would sweat profusely and my feet would get cold. Do you really think that this is not related the colonoscopy? Is this anxiety related more likely?

Thank you so much,

Brief Answer:
Absolutely yes

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I strongly opine in favour of stress and anxiety and definitely it is not colonoscopy. Although it is difficult to do but I feel you should stop thinking about erection and dysfunction. This will give time for body to come out of the stress and will have natural erections.

I hope this helps you further.
Thanks and regards.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

I woke up with out an erection last night a couple times then my body start to sweat profusely again. But toward the morning I was dreaming about kissing a pretty girl then I had a eretction. I somehow know to wake up and check if I have an erection or not while I was sleeping. Perhaps this is so stressful for me and constantly on my mind. The erection went away once I start feeling on my penis. It could be that I was feel anxiety again. Hopefully I will get better in time after this extremely traumatic experience. What are you thoughts on this?

Thank you again,

Brief Answer:
I think you are going to have spontaneous one as today moning

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

The presence of spontaneous erection with dreams in early morning (REM sleep) is clear indicative that there is no organic problem and it i hoped that you will get the erections as usual.

In my view stop checking it and give it the required time. I understand it is stressfull but it likely to complicate the process of recovery rather than helping.

I hope this gives you the required strength and confidence.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for all your help. I do have two more follow up questions. Do colonoscopy cause prostatitis or make it worse if one has prostatitis? Do you think the two are related?

Brief Answer:
It does not cause prostatitis

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

For the first question the answer is NO. Colonoscopy is not involved among causative factors of prostatitis.

For the second part yes it is possible specially in cases of acute prostatitis. Since iit passes over prostate it stimulates the prostate and may spread the infection leading to worsening of prostatitis.

I hope this answers you.
Thanks and regards.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for your quick answer! It is possible but is it likely that colonoscopy will worsening of prostatitis will occur? Have you seen that in practice or heard about this from colleagues or in the literatures? I tried to search this on the internet but not much was found on this relationship.

Brief Answer:
That is applicable for acute prostatitis

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I have not encountered any case with worsening of prostatitis after colonoscopy but theoretically it is possible in acute prostatitis. One of my case worsened after DRE which is similar to colonoscopy when it comes to prostate involvement.

You will not find direct evidence but the procedures which manipulate the prostate in similar way alike colonoscopy have found association.

I hope this assists you further.
Thanks and regards.

Thank you doctor Kumar!

I asked the doctor who did the procedure and he said that he did not come near the prostate. I also ask my regular GI doctor and he said there is a theoretical probability that the prostate is stimulated. Hopefully I will be okay. I still very anxious about this episode.

Brief Answer:
He must be correct

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for follow up.

Since the colonoscopy doctor avoided stimulating prostate the risk is very low if any. I understand your anxiety but please understand that anxiety is our biggest enemy when out of proportion.

Have faith in your doctor and GOD as they are your saviours.

Thanks again.
