Question: Hi
My son aged 6 years is always having slight cough and mucus deposited in his lungs .
Whenever I approch his family pediatrician (M.D pediac ) he checks and prescribes antibitocs alongwith other medicines . for a period of 7 days . His cold vanishes during that period but again it appears after a week or so . I dont think it is advisable to give him always medicines
What should we do ? I am afraid that he doent catch pneumonia in the long run .
Pls advise what is the long term solution.

Brief Answer:
Recurrent RTI , Improve immunity, avoid contacts.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear

Recurrent Respiratory tract infection is a viral infection and quite common (Often six to twelve times a year).

Initially this viral infection should be self limiting with some symptomatic drugs, but if not treated properly may gradually changes to superadded bacterial infection, requiring even antibiotics if proven.
Usually it spreads in some seasons like spring and autumn.

Contact with infected person should be avoided, Usual cause of spread contact with is already infected person.

Improve the immunity of the child by giving high protein diet and adding multivitamins and iron syrups.
Rule out any chronic subtle infection in the body by investigating him with CBC, ESR, AEC, Mx TEST. URINE EXAMINATION, and Chest X-Ray etc.

Hope the query is answered.
