Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: At 47 I am in perimenopause by definition. I have noticed slight changes in my periods but nothing major. I have minor hot flashes, constant PMS all month long, irritability most of the time and mood swings, I have not skipped any periods yet but they only last two days. My mother was 48 when she had her last period and so was her mother. Based on this how close am I to menopause? Also, my husband is 70. Can we still conceive??

Brief Answer:
The chances are low.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am,
Thanks for trusting hcm about your health care.
I can understand your concerns.
As with your symptoms and history you are in perimenopausal stage and your mother had menopause at the age of 48 yrs. so you are also very close to menopause because usually female menstrual pattern similar to her mother.
Sorry to say but if you are achieving menopause and your husband age is 70 yrs. the chances of pregnancy is very low.
But if you want to concieve than consult a Gynecologist and get yourself examined and conceived under her supervision.
Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more questions.
Good luck.

Brief Answer:
It can be due to PMDD.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am,
Sorry for the long delay in my response.
I have gone through your symptoms and in my opinion it is due to PMDD( premenstrual dystrophic syndrome) , a more severe form of PMS.
Dietary restrictions, aerobic exercises, salt restrictions are helpful in your cases.
You should take calcium daily which is also helpful in treatment of this disorder.
You can take floxetine( serotonin uptake inhibitors) after consulting your doctor because serotonin is involved in its pathology.
Hope it is useful.
Good luck.

My last period was only not even a day of full flow and it was done. They seem as though they keep getting shorter in duration and flow. My mother's were very heavy though when she went through it. Are both of these patterns normal? And why do these extreme patterns occur in late 40's. Based on my lighter flow and shorter duration, is it likely my periods will start to skip soon? I just don't know what to expect anymore.
doctor
Answered by Dr. Richa Agarwal (7 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes, both the patterns are normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am,
Sorry for the delay in my response.
Yes, both the pattern are normal.
Usually when female achieving meopause her cycle become heavier but in some cases it can be scanty also.( due to anovulation and lesser estrogen).
It is usually due to hormonal changes, mainly estrogen levels increases than decreases.
Yes, if you starts scanty period with long duration maybe you will stop your menses soon.
But two things keep in mind in some cases it will take 8-10 yrs when complete cessation of menses occur and sometimes it starts again after 5-6 months ( so one year cessation period is important) .
Hope it is of some use.
Good luck
