Suggest Genetic Counselling For Sickle Cell Anemia

Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: Good day. I would like to get an advice on my kid's case. He is a sickle cell patient about to marry of a sickle cell trait, but i am afraid this might have an affect on their children in future. I myself have opposed the idea that they connect as a family for the sake of my future grandchildren. I do not want them to suffer pain later. I have some members of my family with such case, as well as some very close friends of mine. I can understand what it means to have pain on kids and parents. I have attached blood test results of both. Please advice me. Thank you. XXXX

Brief Answer: Full chances of transmitting disease Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic. There is full possibility that if a patient of sickle cell anemia marries a person carrying the trait of sickle cell anemia, the children will either suffer from sickle cell anemia or the sickle cell trait. Genetic counselling is required for your son. The genetic counselling is correct step according to eugenics however, a person has a free will to take his/ her own decisions. The genetic aspect is based on scientific knowledge but it is not binding on any person to follow them Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
Note: For detailed guidance on genetic screening consult a genetics specialist
