Suggest Dosage For Valproic Acid

Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2016
Question: Hello, dr. Sheppe... I am very sorry for not following up with you.

I spoke with nurse practitioner and she and I spoke. She is new, but is very understanding. She understood what was happening to me. I explained to her that I was feeling better with the lower dose and she agreed that I could continue with the 5ml of Valproic Acid, instead of the 10ml of Valproic Acid which was prescribed at my recent stsy at hospital starting on March 14th, 2016.

I have been feeling better thankfully. Just a little tired... but ok. I have not been having anxiety as before, so I am very happy.

I saw my psychologist, recently, too, who I see for anxiety. My visit was calm. We had a visitor in the room when I spoke to the psychologist. The psychologist asked me if it was ok... I said it was alright.

I will let you know how I feel, and if anything new should occur.

Thank you for your followup message, dr. Sheppe, it is good to hear from you. I hope all is well, too.

PS, the nurse practitioner said she was from New York City. We spoke quite a bit... and she helped to organize my paperwork of my records on the computer which she said was duplicated several times. :-)

PS, I will followup with Dr (psychiatrist) soon at end of August.

PS, to add... just writing you so you know how I'm doing. Next time will write you. Thank you for thinking and caring to followup with me.

Detailed Answer:
Hello xxxxxxxxxx, it's so nice to hear from you again.

It sounds like the valproic acid at 5ml is better for your anxiety. Make sure to get your blood levels checked to ensure the valproic acid is at a therapeutic level in your system. If it is, then everything is good, and this dose will hopefully be more effective for you.

As the valproic acid level continues to decrease and your body adjusts to the new level, you will feel less tired. So, this will get better!

I'm glad you have a psychologist to talk to. This should be of great help.

Do you have any further questions for me right now? It's always a pleasure to hear from you.

Thank you, Dr. Sheppe... I hope that I will feel ok over time... for the mean time I am feeling well. The tiredness was after I had risperdal injection on Wednesday, I feel better, though now. I usually don't feel tired after injection, though. Thank you, for your time, I know you have a lot of other people to care for, so, I will not take up any more of time until is necessary to ask you a question. I hope that I feel better for some time, though. Just to note, I usually go get a snack after injection which is 50mg of risperdal every 2 weeks. This time I didn't because I was waiting to see my case worker for a long while. This probably does not have any effect, though.

Detailed Answer:
People do indeed sometimes feel tired after the risperidone injection. Perhaps you were feeling tired because you did not have your usual snack. But this tiredness will go away very soon.

Please ask me ask many questions as you want! You are a high priority patient for me, I'm happy to speak with you at any time.

For now, please remember to rate and close this thread.
