Advised given on certain food that might help and those that are thought worsen the RA
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at healthcaremagic.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.
Diet in rheumatoid arthritis can affect it by two ways: one is effect in inflammation and one effect on weight that in itself can affect arthritis.
Diet rich in fruit and vegetable and avoiding saturated fat is the main one for healthy weight and indirectly healthier joints.
Many people try to identify certain foods that might affect their joints and most of these are preceptions than really verified scientifically and you should not totally avoid a whole group of food for this purpose as this might bring important nutrient deficiencies on you.
Some food that are thought that improve joint pain in RA are:
- omega 3, fish oil- fish rich in omega 3 fats are thought to be helpful
- selenium rich food like whole grain food, crab, oysters etc.
- fiber in diet
- pure olive oil, might be worth using instead of other oils to cook and instead of butter
- Vit D and calcium help bones be healthy
Food that are thought to ease inflammation are:
- fast foods due to products fried or grilled in high temperatures
- food reach in omega 6 fats like sunflower, soybean, corn
- animal fat is considered unhealthy and that might affect you, this is butter, fat etc.
- if there is certain food you notice affects you it might be worth trying to stop it for a few weeks to see the effect.
In general a well balanced mediteranian diet is healthy and thought to help with joints, it consists of omega 3 fats, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and olive oil.
Try to loose weight if your BMI is over 25- you will see a great effect of this in your joints.
If you smoke you might benefit from quitting smoking also.
Regular physical activity is needed to keep your joints moving and exercise them.
I hope this is helpful and answers to your question but please feel free to ask in case anymore clarification is needed on this.
