Posted on Sat, 5 Jul 2014
Question: Dear Doc - In a recent health check up done , I was diagnosed as having elevated sugar levels and high cholestrol . I met a GP , who prescribed ZORYL M1 , ECOSPRIN 75 , ROSUCAR F . My HBA1c is 11.9 and PPBS is 200 currently post 10 day course of medicine . As of now the Zoryl M1 which I take is (1-0-1/2) , I wanted to know during Ramazan (month of fasting) , can I change to (1/2-0-1) , as I would be fasting during the day ? Also wanted to know - does this imply that I am diabetic and have to continue medicines + restrictions life long OR medicines will help me recover the spike noticed in my blood reports ?

Brief Answer:
In diabetes, medication is continued life long.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXXXXX I had gone through your query and understood your concerns.

Sir, let me appreciate for your positive approach. The sugar levels you have mentioned are higher to normal. It has been only 10 days you started taking medicines, It takes 2-3 weeks more to get the medicines and the body metabolism get coordination.

Coming to your query, If I were your treating doctor, In such a condition, I would welcome and also recommend the change of medicine Zoryl M1 to (1/2 - 0 - 1), as you have mentioned. Discuss this also with your treating doctor and follow his advice also.

The blood sugar level HbA1c of 11.9 is high and it indicates you are diabetic. Once the diabetes is established and started medication, you need to continue the medication lifelong in order to keep the sugar levels under control. You cannot stop when the sugar levels are brought down, because once the medicines are stopped, they bounce back again. But don't worry much, With regular medication, Proper diet and exercise, You can lead a quiet normal life like non-diabetics.

Hope this guides you. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wishing you good health.
Thank you.
