Should HIV Tests Be Taken A Second Time 55 Days After Unprotected Sex?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Oct 2017
Question: I am a 53-year-old heterosexual male. I had unprotected intercourse exactly three times with a female who would be considered low risk for HIV. She had never been tested for HIV and didn't know her status, but doesn't have any reason to suspect exposure to it. We had intercourse on July 2, and then twice more between July 2 and July 15. I had an Ab/Ag test on August 26 (42 days after last possible exposure, and 55 days after first possible exposure), and it came back negative/non-reactive/no laboratory evidence of infection. Do I really need to take another test at 84 days/3 months/12 weeks, or can I consider my August 26 test results to be conclusive/final?

Brief Answer:
These test are very accurate.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you writing in healthcare magic.

I read carefully your history and I think that these 4th generation HIV tests after 42 and 55 days are very accurate.
But, based on the HIV guidelines, even that exist a low risk from this sexual intercourse, you should do a 4 th generation HIV test 3 months after exposure as a conclusive test.

I hope my answer helps you.
Regards.
