Noticed Brown And Black Specks In Urine. What Could Be The Problem?

default
Posted on Sun, 4 Nov 2012
Question: For the last 4 days or so I have noticed brown and black specks (kind of like sand) in my urine and when I wipe there is a little brown on the toilet paper. This happens maybe every other time I go. I went to the doctor today and gave a urine sample but she seemed very perplexed and is sending the sample out for tests. I won't know anything until next week but I'm very anxious and worried. I have to mention that I have no pain anywhere (except some back due to ever present constipation) and feel completely normal except for the urine issue. I'm also drinking a lot of water and that's all I ever drink. I keep reading online that maybe it's kidney stones so I'm trying to double up on the water to help but I'm in the bathroom now every 10 minutes. Any suggestions?

Hi,
Welcome to XXXXXXX
Most probably this could be urinary tract infection or stone.
But urinary tract tumors need to ruled out.
If the urine shows infection, needs treatment with appropriate antibiotics.
Anyway, it is better to get a ultrasound scan of the abdomen done to look for other causes like tumour.
Till then,
1. Oral fluids in plenty.
2. Cranberry juice.
3. Urinary analgesics like AZO
should help.
Get well soon.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. Your answer makes a lot of sense but I just have a couple more questions.

1. What if it's not an infection? Should I get an ultrasound either way? Saying there is a possibility of a tumor freaks me out.

2. What are urinary analgesics or AZO?

3. I drink only water for many years and a health drink with Acai berries and 19 other fruits, including cranberry juice called Monavie for 8 years. It's hard to imagine having an infection. Should I drink more cranberry juice straight?

Thank you again!

Hi,

Welcome back.

1. Cranberry juice in any form is ok.
2. AZO is a urinary analgesic and antiseptic, taken in the tablet form for symptom relief. It is available in the U.S. If not available over the counter, prescription should be sought for.
3. Part of evaluation is looking for a tumor in the bladder. It is stressed in order to diagnose early, if present, so that the chance of cure is not missed.
In other words, infection and stones are treatable and unlikely to threaten life. But tumor if missed early, cannot be taken lightly.
Having written all that, it does not mean you have tumor but, it is scientifically advisable to rule out one. So an ultrasound is advisable.

Wishing you best health,
Regards
