Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.Ratnakar Kini and I am pleased to answer your query.

The lump could be an enlarged lymph node. Since it is painful, infection is a possibility.
A complete blood count may be done to see if it is due to infection.
A course of antibiotics may be taken to see if it shrinks.

I hope that answers your question.

I have a 3yr old that sudden developed an area of neck swelling. He is prett much asymtomatic. No fever. Periodic umbilical pain for the last 2 weeks. We went to the ER and they discovered that he has multiple enlarged lymph nodes bilaterally on his neck. The did an abdominal ultrasound which showed borderline splenomegaly and an enlarged peripancreatic lymph node. Rountine blood work came back normal. The ER doctors had no answers for me--just told me to follow up with my pediatrician. Any ideas as to what could cause this?

My almost 4 year old daughter had low grade fever last night (highest was 100 axillary), and vomiting. This AM I noted petichiae on the cheeks and eyelid and swollen lymph nodes in neck. She did say her cheeks hurt and her finger. Very faint lacelike rash noted to palms which she does have on ocassion. Currently her appetite is improved and she is afebrile with phenergan and APAP. Should I take her to be evaluated by ped?
