Is Working Out Safe When Suffering From High Resting Heart Rate?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: Im interested in starting to work out at a gym. My resting heart rate is 96 bpm.

It's been 10 years since I worked out. I plan on seeing a doctor to get checked out. In the mean time, is it safe to start slow or should I see a doctor first? Im 36 years old and also a smoker.

Brief Answer:
BP monitoring & gyming under supervision

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

It is safe to start workout with a trained gym trainer.
Since, you have a high resting heart rate, I would suggest you to consult your primary health provider.
Blood pressure needs to be measured and cardiovascular examination also needs to be done.
In case blood pressure is elevated, appropriate measures can be taken like life style modification and drugs if required.
Workout in gym is ideally started slowly so that the body can adjust and get used to physical activity.
Workout under supervision of a trained instructor is quite safe.

If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer.
