Is Walking Advisable After Being Affected By Polio?

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: I had polio when I was a child and to this day one leg is slightly smaller than the other. I limp sometimes and my question is if too much walking is good or bad for my polio condition. I walk about 3 to 5 miles daily(5 times a week).
I tried using a lift shoe a while back but I could not get used to it.

Brief Answer:
Walking is good for you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
There is no harm in walking 3 to 5 miles daily. This is a good exercise for your limbs and will help in keeping the tone of muscles intact. It is better to try using lift shoe or orthotics to minimize the limp. It will help in a better balance and will retard other age related degenerative changes on the more weight bearing side.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks for answering my question, I hope it's not too late because I have some joint knee pain occasionally on the non-polio leg.

I put some thing in the shoes on the short leg to lift it a little, will that work as well as a lift shoes?

Brief Answer:
You can use a shoe insert.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Yes you can insert something in the shoe- near heel. It is better to get a shoe insert which is more comfortable.
Hope my answer is helpful.
