Question: Referanc XXXX

Dear Dr.

My wife is suffering from body pain specifically bones and her sleep is very much affected , can't have proper sleep. We suspect the low vitamin D causing this, not sure though. And she is taking VITA-D 50,000 once a week, is this right or enough knowing her level of vitamins D is 12.

Would appreciate your advice. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Continue same treatment. Add calcium supplements. Sunlight exposure. Diet

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

Normally Vitamin D level in the blood should be about 20ng/mL but her level is 12 which indicated a deficiency.

Low Vitamin D causes a problem called Osteomalacia where the bones become very weak and generalised body pain occurs along with muscular weakness.

Daily requirement is 600IU, which will be adequately satisfied by the Vitamin D infection she is getting.

Sunlight exposure is very important for Vitamin D function and Calcium to bring strength to the bones.

She can continue taking the same and Calcium supplements also will help like Tablet Shelcal 500mg twice a day for a month.

She should eat calcium and Vitamin D rich food like Green leafy vegetables, Nuts, eggs, soya, if non vegetarian she can have lean meat, fried fish, chicken. Getting early morning sunlight exposure is best for the Vitamin D metabolism so if she can do daily early morning walk for 45 minutes outside the house, it will really improve her.

This treatment will take a couple of months approximately to see the effects so kindly be patient till then and support her.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Regards,

Dr. Aashish Raghu
