Is Turmeric Effective For Psoriasis?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: what do you know about tumeric and psoriasis? does it help clear up the skin? I have read it can be a blood thinner. so if I take the capsules should I stop taking low-dose aspirin every day? what's your opinion. 500mg twice a day is what is recommended in the articles I have read. My own doctor doesn't have much information and thus doesn't have aan opinion. I was hoping you might have more information on the subject. thank you XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
i wont recommend turmeric

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query and i have noted your concern

Turmeric has no value in the treatment of psoriasis. There are no published studies in scientific journals or clinical trials of its use in psoriasis. As a dermatologist i wont recommend it. In fact, no dermatologist would recommend it for use in psoriasis. It may rather flare psoriasis or have other side effects. There are better alternatives to turmeric that can be used in psoriasis and those would also have published evidence of efficacy in psoriasis e.g methotrexate, cyclosporine, humira etc

Brief Answer:
turmeric is not an approved treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi. Thank you

I have read the article. The article just says that there are few cases who responded but for evaluating the efficacy of a drug there has to be a larger number of patients and comparison with another drug so as to accurately judge the efficacy of a new drug. Assuming the drug to be efficacious on basis of few case reports can be misleading. As of now turmeric is not an approved treatment for psoriasis.

do you doctors pay attention to any alternative medicines? What else could we try besides the clobetasol ointment and lotions we are currently using? we need additional help.

will it do any harm to try the tumeric capsules? anything precautions we should take?

Brief Answer:
I would insist on trying established therpies for your psoriasis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

There is no harm in trying an alternative medicine if it is backed by a valid data i.e benefit of use in large number of patients and efficacy when compared to a proven therapy of psoriasis. But as far as I know, till now turmeric does not have any such data to support its benefit in psoriasis.
Psoriasis treatment involves a lot of options, not just clobetasol ointment. Treatment depends on the extent and severity of psoriasis. While topical treatments like steroids ointments, topical Vitamin D analogues like calicotriol ointment alone suffice for limited disease. However if the disease is not effectively controled with topical therapies or is widespread, systemic therapies may be tried. Systemic therapies are used for widespread involvement with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis include methotrexate, cyclosporin, phototherapy, biologics like adalimumab (Humira) and retinoids.
I encourage you to visit a dermatologist who would start you on one of the above treatments. Turmeric capsules may benefit, may not affect psoriasis or may even flare psoriasis as psoriasis is known to flare to certain medications.
No dermatologist would encourage you to take turmeric because it is a rogue drug. What it will do to your disease in not yet know. It may benefit your disease but it may have an opposite effect too!! Psoriasis is a chronic disease and it is often frustrating for the patient who is always on the lookout for some form of magical therapy which would get rid of their disease and this can drive them into trying innovative therapies which are not backed by scientific data.
