Brief Answer:
Unlikely to transmit rabies at 4 months but please stop him from biting.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
If your pet labrador is vaccinated against rabies and is 4 months old then presently he must be always at home and not exposed to other animals. Under this situation he will not transmit rabies.

However, once he grows older then there is every possibility of him getting getting in contact with an infected animal. Though pet dogs which are vaccinated will never have the disease by themselves, it is always better to train your dog not to bite without provocation.

The bites which you see at 4 months are actually not aggressive bites but due to teething, affection and behavioral development. This is harmless but please try to stop this biting (even if he is trying to show affection) so that he does not make it a habit to bite humans when he grows older. This can also cause your dog to bite any stranger or known person.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.

Our dog has not got in to contact with other dogs, but we take him for a walk in our building compound for nearly an hour ever day.He has been given Raksharab vaccine in Oct 2014 and followed up with Canvac r vaccine by his Vet in Nov 2014.
Do you think that he is at risk of contracting Rabies and we at risk of getting Rabies through him, because we are in constant touch with our Dog? I raise this querry only because he is not always at home as you presumed.
I mean to say he is taken for a walk every day for an hour inside the building compound. The children in the building also play with him.

Brief Answer:
Dog is completely immunized 28 days after vaccination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Raksharab is recommended for immunization of dogs. Immunity is conferred for 36 months. However, annual vaccination is recommended in countries like XXXXXXX CANVAC R will provide added protection.

These injections are given after the dog is 3 months of age. About 4 weeks after injection the dog ifs completely protected against rabies.

In the situation described by you, there is no need to worry at all. It is completely safe to go for walks in your building. Once 28 days of vaccination are over then even going out can be considered acceptable but if another animal bites him or he bites another animal then you should take your pet to the vet for a booster dose of vaccination if required.

If you follow above rules then there is no risk of rabies to you or your children.

Hope your query is answered.

Brief Answer:
Your dog might need booster dose rabies vaccine if bitten by other animals.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Once your dog is vaccinated, you can give booster doses every year after consulting the vet. This will completely protect your pet dog from rabies.

I also have a pet dog which is completely vaccinated and once he was bitten when taken for a walk. The vet gave him a booster of rabies vaccine at that time.

In the same way if your pet dog also is bitten by any other animal then taking him to the vet is advisable and a booster might be given depending on duration since last booster vaccination.

Hope your query is answered.
