default
Posted on Wed, 12 Nov 2014
Question: Hi. I just spray painted outside for about 10 minutes. About 12 weeks along. I feel so stupid as I likely have inhaled some if the chemicals. Do you know the risk for a one time exposure ?

Brief Answer:
No harmful affect to baby at this stage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

Inhalation or smelling of modern household paint (for 10 min) RARELY causes harm to your unborn baby at 12 weeks pregnancy because Fetal Organogenesis is already completed.

Therefore, risk of birth defect, miscarriage and learning problems will be quite LOW or RARE as absorption of paint through smell is quite NEGLIGIBLE due to inadequate exposure time. However, you should be more careful from next time.

MY SUGGESTION: You would undergo QUADRUPLE TEST (within 15th to 22nd week) and FETAL ANOMALY SCAN (18th to 23rd week) to exclude RARE possibility. You can consult with your OBSTETRICIAN regarding this and do periodic check up as per schedule.

Hope, I have answered your query. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and successful motherhood.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
