Is Electromyography Test Advisable While Suffering From Weak Muscles In Legs?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: My question concerned a test to see if my "weak muscles" were caused by nerves in my legs. If I get the test, and get a positive report, is there anything that can be done to help my balance? I don't see the reason I should go through another expensive test.

Brief Answer:
Highly recommended to go for EMG (nerve conduction studies).

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

Your doctor wants to go for EMG (electromyography) test. This test is very necessary for patients who have got an inconclusive or negative CAT scan/MRI of head and neck region.

Let me explain it to you in simple words. WE all have two portions of nervous system. A central and a peripheral nervous system. CAT scan and MRI checked your central nervous system (that includes brain and spinal cord) and that has no issues related to your disease.

Now the most important investigatory step comes into play and that is to check the peripheral nervous system (having said that central system is ok).

Doctor will check if you have any problems with the nerves coming out of the spinal cord and going to the peripheral areas of the body. It will also check the junction where the muscles meet the nerves to receive the electrical impulses and contract accordingly. It also includes the muscles of posture.

In EMG we give stimulus from outside to the muscles to see how fast the nerves send the electrical impulses, and are they efficient enough or need treatment. Also how efficiently muscles respond to that electrical activity (that is why EMG is also called a nerve conduction study).

Yes, getting tested, and diagnosed, you will get benefit of proper treatment to resolve the issues you have. This is how I daily screen out and diagnose my patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome,Parkinson syndrome, herniated discs, ALS, myasthenia gravis MG, carpal tunnel syndrome etc etc just to name some.

You are highly recommended to go for the nerve conduction studies as advised by your doctor. It will help diagnose the disease you have.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further questions. If satisfied, please close the discussion and give a five star rating.
