Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: today I felt very tired and not feeling well sleep almost all day, so I decided to check my blood sugar even though I have not been diagnosed with diabetes. and my level was at 265. I just had a fasting blood test 3 months ago and my sugar was 89 when I was doing a normal blood workup. I do take Zoloft and atenol. my mom had diabetes and she gave me an extra meter she had and always told me keep and eye on my sugar levels. my question is can you get diabetes in 3 months time that fast? and what can I do in the meantime to get my sugar down before I get into my doctor.

Hello. Thanks for writing to HCM. Noted the contents of your query.

Since you have the symptoms of diabetes with a random glucose level of 265 you have diabetes. However, it would be prudent to get a Hba1c done which would estimate the average glucose levels of the preceding 3 months. That would also clear our doubt if you have been having undetected diabetes for atleast 3 months.

Normally, patients can have normal fasting levels with increased post meal glucose initially. Its likely the diagnoses was missed earlier as only fasting glucose was checked.

I would recommend you see a dietician and get a customised diet plan. Also start exercising if you are not active already - atleast 30 min walking daily. However, since you are having symptoms like tiredness you may not be able to exercise right away.

You will need medications to control diabetes after getting a routine physical examination done.

As of now, please drink plenty of water. You can also have lemonade with salt. That will make you feel a lot better. Regarding diet, cut down all refined sugar and products with white flour. Have small frequent meals and be mindful about the carbohydrate content of it.

Kindly seek medical help without much delay. Wishing you good health.
Warm regards
Dr Praveen
