Is Keflex The Right Medication For UTI?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: Good Morning, now taking keflex 500mg - 3x a day for 7 days for mild UTI. but reading conflicting information. Is this a good choice for UTI? Culture came back at <10,000 for groub b strep.

Also, hate taking anything due to side effects. took this about 4 years ago for skin infection and tolerated it OK. is this a relatively safe antibiotic? Do I need to take all 7 days (seeing doc at 2:30 - XXXXXXX time zone - today so trying to get info before I go in) or would shorter course work if I push fluids and use cranberry etc.

also, am taking probiotics in morning and evening to prevent thrush, etc.

thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
UTI

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
Keflex is the first line of treatment with first generation cephalosporins for UTI FOR 7 days. Ideally the course has to be continued completely for 7 days for fear of relapse which can be severer. If you are benefitted by the drug and the symptoms have reduced then its working for you and should be completing the complete course.
Also a repeat culture after 7 days shall confirm if the infection has finally subsided or not.
You may continue cranberry and increased water intake, which is always helpful in UTI.
