Is HIV Test Done 60 Days After Exposure Conclusive?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Feb 2016
Question: I tested negative for HIV after 60 days, I had a rash after 45 days that I thought may be HIV related is it possible that the rash was HIV related and I still tested negative. How come some people test positive at different times after the initial infection? I am waiting to test after 90 days so I can put my fears to rest.
Have you seen people test negative after 60 days and then positive after 90 days, and do you have any theories on why a person might take longer to have a positive test result.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Chances of HIV positive results is almost nil.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for query. I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.
Welcome to health care magic. I have gone through the details and can make out your anxiety.

It depends on the test done.If it is HIV RNA/DNA PCR the results will be same even after 60 or 90 days.So it will remain same.If these tests were done ,it will come negative after 90 days too.

Usually The tests done detect antibodies against HIV . These can be formed as early as 2 weeks post exposure. Usually it will appear in all individuals by 2- 6 weeks. In few individuals with cancer, on immunotherapy/ steroids it can be delayed until 3 months. In them it can give delayed positive results.
So the window period considered is until 3 months post exposure.
The chances of test results coming positive later after 3 months is nil, if you do not come under any such conditions
But to be clear of anxiety it is better to go for test after 3 months.

You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you

Not to sound too paranoid but does this mean if I had cancer, unknown to me I could later find out I had HIV and cancer? Or do you mean someone who is being treated for cancer, anyway I am waiting for another two weeks and will test again. I have no idea what kind of test I received all I can say is that it was a blood test. I will ask next time I take the test, it has been a long time waiting but I did feel better after taking the test and getting the negative results.
Thank you for your response it was some what comforting, the information on the internet can be confusing, so a response from a doctor is very much appreciated.
Thanks once more

Brief Answer:
Chances of both cancer and HIV is nil.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.Thank you for wishes. We are pleased that it was helpful.

Do not worry about cancer or other conditions. It would have manifested itself ,if present in any site. Both in early stages will not affect the test results. The test would have come positive, as cancer can suppress the immune system in later stages.

Forget about the episode for now .Relax, do exercises, get involved in activities of your interest.
To relieve your anxiety go for HIV 1&2 antibodies test after 3 months.

You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you
