Is Dextroamphetamine Same As Dex.CR Capsule?
Question: My husband has been on Dextroamphetimine ER for many years to control Narcolepsy. We are having more and more difficulty getting his prescriptions filled, recently it was changed to Dex. CR and is a different looking capsule. Is there a difference? I can only find references to a Dex.SR.
Apparently only one manufacturer is left for this medication and they sure can charge for it. Our copay has gone from $15/mo to $75-95 in just the last 3 years.....

You are correct there is a shortage of Dextroamphetamine in the United States. There is only one manufacturer and it make the supply limited. Because of this people have switched to other brands of amphetamines. This would include Concerta or Ritalin. You could discuss possible switching of his medication with his doctor.
The higher copays are due to changes in the health insurance industry related to Obama care. There is nothing we can do about that.
In summary

quick followup.....your answer is not clear. What is the difference between the Dex. suffixes? ER/ SR/ CR. if any? The CR certainly looks different than the SR he has been taking.

What it means is that the dextroamphetamine is in a formulation that prolongs the time the medication is in the system. That is all that means and with the Dextroamphetamine the amount of time for any of those formulations are all the same. The capsules is different because the manufacturer has changed or the manufacturer changed the capsules appearance. The medication in the capsules is still the same.
