It can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. This is where the citalopram increase the serotonin in your brain causing extreme high body temperatures and muscle cramping. It is rare but it can happen. This combination of medication is commonly used together and the benefits clearly out weight the very low risk of serotonin syndrome.

Buspirone

The combination of citalopram and buspirone is used frequently for anxiety disorders. Buspirone is only used though for general anxiety and is not very good for panic disorders though if you can get the general stuff under control the panic is less likely to start.
In addition to your medication I recommend doing cognitive behavioral therapy. I recommend a book called the" Anxiety and Phobia Handbook" by Dr. Bourne. This along with your medication can help

The Buspirone will take about 2-4 weeks to work. You will not get any side effects like you did when you started citalopram. Buspirone can sometimes cause nause dizziness headache fatigue dry mouth, depression blurred vision abdominal pain and insomnia, but these reactions are not very common
