I Recently Used A Mixture Of 1 Part 3% Hydrogen

Posted on Thu, 2 Apr 2020
Question: I recently used a mixture of 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 part water for an enema and have had abdominal cramping and have expelled small amounts of bright red blood mixed with mucus for the last two hours, immediately following the enema. I then read online that hydrogen peroxide can be deadly inside the body. I am not bleeding much, and the cramping has lessened instead of increased, but I am still worried. Do I need to go to the ER or can this resolve on its own? I used maybe 4-5oz total.

Brief Answer:
Better to visit ER

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and detailed history.
Please give additional information for me to assist you better:
Your age and gender please.
Why was such an enema taken? Any constipation or so?
What it wonders is the bleeding and pain that followed enema, it is possible that there might be small injury caused by the nozzle of the tube you inserted or separation of the fecolith or so.
Since there is pain and bleeding it is best to visit ER and get a clinical evaluation, examination, proctoscopy or sigmoidoscopy done to see for the cause of pain and bleeding to be sure that there is no serious problem.
X-ray of abdomen may show any excessive gas or so.

I Hope this answers your query and helps you.
Take care.

Female age 23. I have had history of constipation, and recently developed a small hemorrhoid that I was worried about making worse if I waited longer, so I tried the enema— first time trying it, and definitely my last. Bleeding doesn’t seem to be from a cut or anything. I have been reading online and some people mentioned that peroxide can cause chemical colitis.

Brief Answer:
As discussed

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Hydrogen peroxide can cause local burns due to release of heat on action, good that you had at least diluted it. It also produces gas bubbles that can cause pressure changes in rectum and colon.
Hence the need to have scopy.
