I mentioned to you previously that I had symptoms of a high-pitched sound when I move my jaw up and down while eating, yawning and even when I turn my head sideways to the affected side as well as grinding the teeth. I also have fullness/pressure in the ear when the jaw is motionless. The doctor thought it was due to the jaw joint although there is no pain or soreness and recommended that I see a stomatologist but she didn't think it was because the Eustachian tube is blocked.

I wondered why I have this fullness/pressure in the ear when the jaw does not even move. Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
Do steam inhalation

Detailed Answer:
Hii, first of all thank you for approaching us with your query. I read through your query and i must say that since jaw problems have subsided it can be due to either ear problem or sinus problem. Isuggest you to do steam inhalation twice or thrice daily so that your sinus gets cleared. If you have flu or common cold let the mucus also clear out(by doing inhalation). Follow this for two weeks. Avoid going out in cold climate. Do pranayama(breathing excrcise included in yoga). Most importantly clear your mind from thinking about it. Once your mind gets engaged in something else slowly it will get forgotten and it will be relieved. Engage your mind in meditation, pranayama, yoga or anything which suits your mind.(distract from this). Itwill be relieved. Have hot water. Do warm water bath also daily. I feel it should be relieved in this. If after these its not relieved will go for ctscan and check. Mind is the best doctor. Think positive and cool mind can be best medicine for any solution. Hopeyou understood what I meant. Thankyou and have a healthy day. DrRohit

Perhaps you misunderstood my last message because I said that my doctor thought the high-pitched sound when I move my jaw up and down and the fullness/pressure in the ear while the jaw is still was due to the temporomandibular joint dysfunction. I also notice a click on the jaw joint when I open the mouth wide. She recommended that I see a stomatologist who I am seeing later this week. Why do I have fullness/pressure in the ear when my jaw does not even move? Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
It is because of the muscles around the joint

Detailed Answer:
Hii thank you for your followup query. I read through your query and I must say that the earlier message i misunderstood the question. I beg your pardon for that. Regarding the latest query, I have seen for some of the patients who come with tmj dysfunction have shown symptom of pressure in the ear canal. It can be due to the muscles around the joint is near to the eustachian tube which constricts creating pressure in the ear canal. Since clicking sound is there it is mostly the tmj problem. The treatment for the tmj will be providing rest to the tmj as told in all earlier messages. For more detailed diagnosis ct scan of the joint has to be seen. The cartilage and disc of that joint has to be seen in the scan. I suggest you to meet the stomatologist because they will check clinically along with xray and scan and may have to consult an ent surgeon and reach the proper treatment plan.Clinical picture of a case can be different than narrating the problem through message. You can try steam inhalation and warm pack on the joint in front of the ear along with muscle relaxant. As told earlier you can use a night guard also. Also reduction in stress has shown good results in many of my tmj patients(so i have told you to reduce stress). Hope you understood what I meant. Thankyou and have a healthy day. Dr Rohit

I went to see the stomatologist earlier today who said that I have costen syndrome. He said the two sides of the mouth were uneven when I bite and therefore he chipped at three teeth on the right-hand side to balance it since the sounds were coming from the left ear. I will see him again in 3 weeks' time to see if the mouth is even and the symptoms from the ear have disappeared. He also mentioned that I would need a night guard temporarily.

Brief Answer:
It will reduce

Detailed Answer:
Hii thank you for your follow up query. Iread through your query. Iwould like to say that do you remember in the starting of your queries I had asked you whether your any teeth are missing on that side. Iwas asking that for the same reason for what your doctor had done today. Balancing of your occlusion of teeth. It can be the problem for tmj dysfunction. Along with the nightguard your joint will be balanced and muscles will come to rest position resulting in less contraction around the eustachian canal and eventually it will reduce the high pitched sound. It will get reduced for sure. I suggest you nothing to be worried now. Justfollow the instructions correctly and it will be fine. Along with it provide rest for the joint. Also reduce the mental stress.Mind can play a major role(again and again i am telling the same).Hope you understood what I meant. Thankyou and have a healthy day. DrRohit

Thank you for your reassurance. What do you mean that mind can play a major role? I do tend to think about the high-pitched sound particularly when I grind or clench my teeth but it is difficult to relax my mind about it since I have suffered these symptoms of sound and fullness in my ear for more than 6 months.

I do not have any pain around the jaw joint but it just feels uncomfortable as I am always aware of the fullness/pressure from the ear and the high-pitched sounds when I move my jaw up and down. However, the stomatologist said that he could see that there had been grinding on my teeth. He didn't want to repair too much in the mouth the first time as he thought too much of the transformation would cause a lot of pain. Many thanks.

Thanks for your reply which I understood clearly.

Just one final thing is that I notice the high-pitched sound in my left ear increases when I grind the teeth on the left-hand side of the mouth. Is that normal?

I will try to stay calm and relaxed about it.

Is the pressure/fullness I receive in the ear due to tmj dysfunction and can the night guard easily resolve it even after more than 6 months? Many thanks.
