Question: I have gastritis for more than one month. I tried nexium plus zantac and it helped. Then I had 3.5 glasses of white wine one day and diet coke for couple of days and gastritis came back. My questions are:
1) Is whiskey also bad for gastritis? I understand it does not cause stomach to produce acid.
2) What medication you will suggest and in what dosage for how long?
3)Does Aciphax work better for some people than Nexium?

Have seen your details.
1)Any alcoholic beverage causes gastritis.
Alcohol itself is a irritant and causes stomach to produce more acid.Any form of alcohol cause gastritis.
2)Tablet Nexium 40 mg twice daily can be raised to 80 mg twice daily(nothing to be taken post 30 minutes After having medicine).Minimum for 3 months initially.
If taking alcohol then take 80 mg tablet of Nexium an hour before along with any antacid like peptobismol 2tsf to coat stomach surface.(Reserved only for days when you can't resist having one or two pegs).
3)Rabeprazole is usually for short term use like for 4 to 8 weeks.However in long runs Nexium is better.

You have suggested Pepto Bismol before drinking alcohol. Is that in tablet form or liquid? How much time before drinking it should be taken?

Should pepto bismol be also taken before drinking 12 oz of diet coke? Is diet coke equally bad as alcohol for gastritis?

You have written 3 months for 40 mg nexium twice daily. Did you mean 3 weeks?

hi,
1)Best liquid combination is (Aluminium hydroxide and Magnesium hydroxide) with a topical local anaesthetic (Oxethazaine) however if you can't fiond iot then you can take peptobismol a liquid.15 ml 30 minutes before drinking so that it can coat the surface of gut.

2)Diet coke contains hypophosphoric acid and causes severe acidity(equally bad for you) basically nay carbonated drink is bad for you.

No Minimum 3 months however if its not effective then follow up after 3 weeks.

As you are concerned about alcohol a lot best way is to take tablet Ranitidine 300mg 15 minutes before drinking.This would help you more then peptobismol.

You mentioned 300 mg Zantac 15 minutes before drinking alcohol. Is that in addition to 2 nexium 40 mg each 1 hr before drinking alcohol?

Before my gastritis, I used to drink 1 diet coke daily. Alcohol was only once a week with few drinks. Should I stay away completely from diet coke or take extra medicine same as before drinking alcohol?

I was taking 1500 mg of magnesium daily for my constipation before gastritis. Now I need less due to gastritis. Is magnesium bad for stomach lining? 500 mg daily ok?

Hi again,
No the main problem with Nexium is that patient needs to remain empty stomach for about 30 minutes post taking the pill.However rantidine though less effective don't have any such restrictions.

Depends totally on you if you want to enjoy life medicines are there for you but you may feel sick some times or problem may increase in future. A better idea is follow a good diet plan for 5 days and do cheat two days in a week.This would keep your problem in control as well as your satiety would be fulfilled.Befoe cheat meal have Zantac or Nexium and enjoy your day(extra dose).

In some people magnesium may cause mild gastritis in high doses but 500 mg is ok.

My diet excluding diet pepsi and alcohol is very good and no change needed for gastritis. I will be happy to have one cheat day with gastritis. But I want to get fixed up and get off medicine.

So I should be taking 2 40 mg nexium daily. Thanks for your 30 minute empty stomach clarification for Nexium.

If I take alcohol, add 300 mg Zantac to the above.

If I drink diet coke, add 300 mg Zantac to the 2 nexium daily.

Please advise if this understanding is correct? Thanks for your patience.

I took nexium 40 mg in morning. Then 150 mg Zantac evening. Then 150 mg Zantac night.

I took it for 2 weeks. No alcohol, only one diet coke in 2 weeks.It was working. No pain or uneasy stomach.

Last friday, I had 3.5 glasses of white wine. Then Saturday, I had 2 diet cokes at dinner.
Sunday pain came back. It is more uneasiness in lower left stomach rather than pain.

Last time I had gastritis was in 2012. At that time, I took aciphex and then to Zantac only.It worked in 2 months and I was completely fine for 6 years.

So I should be taking 2 40 mg nexium daily-yes one on morning and one in evening after 12 hours.

If I take alcohol-Make Nexium 2 tablet 40 mg 30 minutes before drinking.They are better then Ranitidine.

If I drink diet coke, add 300 mg Zantac to the 2 nexium daily-No diet coke daily.Twice a week.Again you can take 2 nexium 40 mg.
