How Can A Pounding Headache In The Back Of The Head, Fever And Red Rashes On Both Legs Be Treated?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Mar 2022
Question: I have had a pounding headache in the back of my head. I have a fever of 100.1 and a red rash on both of my legs.
I have just started on an antibiotic for an ICU. Also, gabapentin for pain issues in my pelvic area.

Brief Answer:
Fever, rash and headache could all be one problem. Need more details.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

If you developed fever, skin rash and headache before you started your antibiotics (which is more likely), then all these are just part of the febrile illness.

A fever associated with a skin rash is more likely to be viral in nature, but the exact diagnosis can only be made based on clinical examination and some blood work.

Please clarify on these few doubts I have so that I can help you further.

1. Since how many days do you have this fever and headache and skin rash?

2. When did you start your antibiotic?

3. What is the name of the antibiotic?

4. Was the antibiotic prescribed by a doctor?

5. Have you got any blood work done? If yes, please upload the images.

6. Do you also have running nose and cough, or sore throat, or burning while passing urine?

7. Do you have chills while you are having fever?

8. Do you have pain behind the eyes along with the headache?

9. Do you have any difficulty and pain while bending your neck after developing this fever and headache?

It is best to get yourself examined in person by a doctor to understand what is going on.

In meanwhile I can suggest you to take Tylenol (acetaminophen) 650 mg every 6 hours once.

This will reduce the headache and fever.

Continue whatever antibiotic you are currently taking, unless the rashes started after starting the antibiotic.

Upload a picture of the rashes.

Keep yourself well hydrated, rest adequately.

I hope this answers your questions.
Hope you get well soon.
Best regards

I have had this for 2 days after being on the antibiotic for 3 days. (Nitrofurnantoin Mono/Mac...100 mg) It was prescribed by my doctor for a bladder infection.
No to all of the rest of the questions.
Why Tylenol rather than Advil? I am taking Walgreens brand, not the original. Could that be it? I have stopped the antibiotic and the Gabapentin...was able to sleep last night, but awoke in pain...the ankle swelling is down, but I still have the rash.
I will call my doctor regarding the antibiotic.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotic seems to be the culprit, stop them and do talk to your doctor.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Since the rashes started after antibiotic use, I strongly suspect an allergic reaction to the antibiotics you have been prescribed.

You should stop them and always remember to mention this allergy to your doctors in future so that they don't make the mistake of prescribing you the same antibiotic.

Drink cranberry juice for now for the urinary tract infection.

Your antibiotics need to be changed, it will be ideal if you can get a urine culture and sensitivity test done so that appropriate antibiotics can be started.

Advil is a good pain relief medicine, but it is not a very good antipyretic (does not reduce fever that well), that is why I suggested Tylenol rather than Advil.

Continue to keep yourself well hydrated.

I hope this answers your question.
Wishing you speedy recovery.
Best regards
