Question: Hi Doctor,
My mother is 62 years old. For the past one month approx.. she is feeling itch in her body. Initially it was less or less frequent but, now she is feeling this itch very frequently and inspite of resisting she has to scratch it and the skin becomes swollen at that place which subsides after some time.

This is occurring almost in full body. Please suggest what could be the cause and what shall she do in this case. I am attaching few pics from her leg (near knee area). Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Urticaria, lab tests, start antihistaminic

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to ask a doctor service
I have gone through your query and and reviewed the attached photographs.
It seems to be urticaria which is an allergic reaction of the skin due to multiple causes.
It could be due to infection, drug and food allergies, thyroid disorders, autoimmune and sometimes occurs without any cause.
I would recommend you to get your thyroid function tests, complete blood count, urine routine examination, serum Ig E level and anti TPO levels checked.
Meanwhile start antihistaminic like tablet levocetrizine ( tab teczine ) 5 mg twice daily and apply calamine lotion on the skin twice daily for 10 days.
These are prescription drugs and should be taken under the supervision of the doctor.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.

Thyroid function tests, complete blood count, urine routine examination were already done one week back and all were normal.

- Shall we do serum Ig E level and anti TPO levels checked as suggested?
- Also, could you please suggest some commercial name for calamine lotion by which I can get in the market?

Thanks.
