Does Taking HCG Injection Lower PSA Levels?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I have been dealing with a psa count of 3.0 the last few weeks. In April of 2014 the psa count was 1.5. I have been considering my options after speaking with a urologist and having a dre exam. I have been on testostorone replacement for a few years now. This is my question. several friends of mine swear to the fact that coming off of testostorone for 3 weeks and taking HCG injections will lower my psa levels. They have explained in a very scientific way that makes me believe they are on to something. What r your thoughts.

Brief Answer:
Level of testosterone is important

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.

Prostate growth is dependent on testosterone level. Given that you have a family history of prostate cancer and that your PSA levels have gone up to 3 from 1.5 over 5 months, it need further evaluation.

I hope your endocrinologist/urologist have done a digital rectal examination of prostate to look for any abnormalities and an ultrasound scan to assess prostate volume.

The recommendations are that, patient should be referred to urologist for consideration of a prostate biopsy for any of the following:
a) Prostate nodule that is palpated at any time.
b) Serum PSA concentration (confirmed by a repeat value) that rises by more than 1.4 ng/mL in any one-year period.

I noted that 2 urologists gave diifferent opinions. Did any of them do a digital examination to look at your prostate size and shape?

Regardiing HCG, it works on testes leydig cells to produce testosterone. It is finally the Testosterone which is the final product. The level of testosterone is that really mattter. The levels produced by HCG injections may be lesser compared to direct use of Testosterone. Again, HCG works only if your testicular function is normal.

We usually measure a testosterone trough and peak value to adjust the dose while you are on treatment.

I do like to agree with your first urologist ( especially in view of family history and your age) regarding a prostate Biospy. However, a direct examination is what really matters.
