Does Recovery After Accidental Injection Of Local Anesthesia Into Blood Vessel Take Long?

Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: I have a QTc value of 522 on average and a diagnosis since 2014 of prolonged QT.
I had dental work done 9/9/2015. Dentist used polocaine 3% and nitrous. First round of injections wore off fairly quickly (she had to tend to another pt and by the time she started on me, I was becoming un-numb). A second round of injections was administered. Partway through the procedure, I felt some of what she was doing. She administered a third round of injections. Within less than a minute after this last set, I felt an odd sensation bloom from my chest and ripple to my extremities. My heart began to race. I reached to check my pulse, and she pulled back and asked if I was ok. I gave a thumbs down. My legs began shaking uncontrollably.
She stopped work and after about 10 minutes switched me to oxygen instead of nitrous. My blood pressure and pulse were both elevated. Approximately 1 hour later, my BP had come down to around 130/90 (still very high) and my pulse was in the 50s and 60s. My legs shook the entire time and there was nothing I could do to stop them.
Ever since, I haven't felt 'right.' I have almost constant headaches at the back of my head and I am dealing with mild vertigo and I feel extremely edgy. I also have frequent palpitations (skipped beats, extra beats, a whooshing sensation). I'm a solid 5 days past the incident. Another dentist suggested she may have injected the local anesthesia into a blood vessel accidentally.
My biggest question is: isn't this taking a bit long to recover from? What should I do now? This is seriously hampering my ability to do anything and is becoming worrisome. When I called my EP/Cardiologist on 9/11, his receptionist scheduled me for 9/21. I am wondering if I need to go to the ER or an urgent care facility in the interim.
Thank you.

Additionally:

In the hour that I was having the reaction, I almost lost consciousness twice. That afternoon, I was absolutely exhausted. I still feel very tired.
5'2" height 118 lb weight. Not taking any medications except Advil. EP prescribed nadolol to replace an atenolol prescription last year, but I never started it after the atenolol dropped my BP and pulse so low.

Brief Answer:
Sooner medical evaluation needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Headaches, dizziness you are experiencing most probably are related to changes in your heart rate and blood pressure, as side effects of prilocaine use.

Since you didn't recover for 6 days, in my opinion, you should get a basic evaluation about heart function ( ECG, ultrasound, blood pressure monitoring) your GP or by going to ER, to avoid any possible stroke.

After that you can consult your Cardiologist and discuss about a long term solution of your concerns.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Take care.

Is prilocaine the same as polocaine?

Brief Answer:
They are the same.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, they are the same.

Regardless to different names, it is a group of drugs used as local anesthetics with effects on cardiovascular system if used systemically.

Hope this helps.
