Does Intake Of Vitamin D3 Lead To Anxiety, Fast Pulse And Heart Palpations?

Posted on Tue, 26 Apr 2016
Question: Why would vit d3 give me anxiety, faster pulse and palpations? My magnesium and calcium tested in normal range. My D is low and I need it. I took 2000 iu for a year, and my D was still declining and my doc told me to double it to 4000iu and now I am having problems each time I take it. Thanks , XXXX

Welcome to HCM. I have reviewed your concern

I have to admit, this is my first query of this nature. The facts around vitamin D do not support this reaction as your doctor so kindly noted. It has been observed that dosages up to 10,000 IU per day of D3 can be taken quite safely.

It is a fact that long term deficiency of vitamin D may cause pain when supplementation is increased and remodeling begins to occur. I will reiterate what your doctor has said, with a normal calcium and magnesium, this reaction should not be occuring at 4000 IU D3.

Now, you have already tried a different composition of repletion and that didn't work. Have you tried injections?

The next step I would suggest is to see an endocrinologist. You realize that Vitamin D is a pro-hormone? It is deeply interconnected with estrogen metabolism, with the functioning of the parathyroid glands, and it sounds like you may need to consult with someone who specializes in hormones.

This sounds like it may involve processes that I have no labs for. I suggest an endocrinologist run some tests on kidney function, parathyroid function, estrogen metabolism and make the determination on how to get your vitamin D regulated and if there are any co-existing conditions impacting on this problem.

Thank you for seeking advice on this issue. I wish you good luck and good health in the future. Regards, XXXXXXX J. Shattler, MS,RDN
