Does Intake Of Birth Control Pills Help In Suppressing Menstruation?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jun 2016
Question: I controlled my period by skipping my inactive birth control pills and started a new pack right away, I missed 4 active pills in a row thinking that would get my period back but now I'm not too sure that's how it works. I haven't been sexually active within the past week. What do I do?

Brief Answer:
You do not need to worry and you can just start a new pack

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

There is no harm in suppressing your period by taking the active pills continuously. However, after suppressing your period for longer than usual, it may take a full seven days after discontinuing your active pills to get your period. So this may be why you did not bleed after the four days you took between packs.

So as long as you have not missed active pills for more than 7 days in a row, you are protected against pregnancy.

There is no reason you cannot suppress your period for longer than a month if you want. Most women will get breakthrough bleeding after three months or so, but there is no reason you cannot manipulate your cycle for convenience as long as you do not miss active pills for more than 7 days.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
