Brief Answer:
Maintenance treatment is required with minoxidil

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have taken note of your query and I have understood it.

Minoxidil 5% solution is a non-specific hair growth promoter & is mainly indicated for treatment of hair fall in androgenetic alopecia in males.

New hair growth that is induced with minoxidil has to be maintained with continuous use of minoxidil. Treatment is life long in androgenetic alopecia.

However, If one were to stop using minoxidil, hair would shed again and the growth would reverse to original levels within 3 months of stopping minoxidil application.

Brief Answer:
Treatment for hair loss in males is long term.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Unfortunately there is no such medical treatment presently. Medicines work as long as you use them
All the medical treatments currently are aimed at preventing rather than restoring hair loss.

Hair loss in males is most commonly due to androgenetic alopecia.
Treatment for androgenetic hair loss in males is with Topical minoxidil and Oral finasteride.
Treatment is effective but it is to be continued long term to maintain results.

Hair transplant offers a long term solution for those who are in advanced stages of alopecia/ baldness.
Even after hair transplant it is advisable to use medicinal treatment to prevent further progression.

Brief Answer:
Minoxidil can be used with good effect for other causes of hair loss

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Of course, minoxidil can be used for hair loss due to causes other than androgenetic alopecia/ hereditary hair loss e.g hair loss due weight loss/ poor diet; acute illnesses like jaundice, dengue, malaria; post-surgery etc

In these cases stopping minoxidil won't lead to increased hair shedding unlike that seen in androgenetic alopecia provided the underlying cause is corrected e.g proper diet if the hair fall was due to poor diet etc etc
