Does Xarelto Interact With Aspirin?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Apr 2017
Question: Hi, I am a 69 year old male in good health.
In January of this year I was diagnosed with a DVT in my left leg calf area. The DVT had no explanation for its origin and I am now on Xarelto, indefinitely. I take Xarelto 20mg. once a day in the A.M.

Prior to this I was on one a day aspirin therapy. I read a lot and I am aware of the many health benefits of aspirin.

With Xarelto, is it safe to add a daily baby aspirin, enteric coated, to get the health benefits of aspirin? Thank you very much.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that aspirin when taken concomitantly with Xarelto can increase the risk of bleeding.

That is why I would not recommend taking it, only if there is absolute indication.

Besides, Xarelto has many of the effects of aspirin.

Unfortunately aspirin is not the best drug to prevent DVT. That is why I would recommend continuing only Xarelto.

Taking both these drugs concomitantly without a specific indication can lead to more adverse effects compared to benefits.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
