Does Xarelto Cause Low Energy?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 May 2014
Question: In early December I developed blood clots in my lungs and have been treated since with Xarelto. (fyi: the clots are result of a blood clotting genetic disorder, as per my hematologist). I am usually a very active 75 yr old female, but my energy has left me for the most part...lots of naps, 8 hour night sleep, and a lot of muscular pain, especially across shoulders. I just do a few things in the house, or getting ready for the day, and I feel the need to stretch out or go to a recliner and rest. I wonder if, because I have been less active due to my energy state, and have not exercised much if it is this or possibly this med? thank you for listening to me.

Brief Answer: May be age related or drug related. Detailed Answer: Hi XXXX, I went through the query and understood your concern. Since you are 75 years now, the low energy state, muscular pain can be due to age related or also due to the drug Xarelto as the drug can cause anemia, low energy state, myalgia in around 1-10% of patients. So for age related weakness or muscular pain, plenty of oral fluids and nutritious diet, vitamin and calcium supplements with mild analgesic will help in preventing the symptoms. If it is due to the drug, then check for complete hemogram (blood test), renal function test to rule out any pathology, follow the above said instruction and if any significant problem is present then the dose or drug need to be adjusted. Usually this drug is safer compared to other older drugs and it is absolute necessary for you to continue. If no problem in blood test, then the above measures will help you. Daily 30-60 min mild outdoor activities will help in boosting your energy and also your wellbeing. Hope this information helps you. Feel free to ask if any further queries and I will be glad to answer them. Wish you good health. Regards

Thanking Dr. Lohit K for his suggestions and a question I have for him is what kind of "mild analgesic" do you suggest? Tylenol has zip effect...I have taken 3 pills at a time. Long ago it was suggested that I may have fibro myalgia...the symptoms have waxed and waned over the years, but exercise has been helpful. right now that seems impossible. Doing light housework uses my energy quickly. I am scheduling an appointment with my PPC today to discuss recent blood work and especially to check on my iron. (I am taking a folic acid as prescribed, with the Xarelto. Not sure if that is iron.) You have enlightened my thinking and exactly which questions to ask Dr. XXXXXXX Thanks again. XXXXXXX Meier

Brief Answer: NSAIDs, Iron as Ferrous forms. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you. Am happy for your satisfaction. 1. Yes mild analgesics I meant drugs like tylenol or aceclophenac or diclofenac. These are NSAID group of drugs which act as anti inflammatory drug and also as analgesic. If you are not relieved with these then the next level of drugs (NSAID + opioid analgesics) need to be tried. This in like different steps towards pain management. 2. In the contents of the drug pack, usually iron will be written as ferrous. So you can check and confirm whether it has iron in it. 3. Do mild exercises or activities that is possible. Don't over exert yourself. I hope this information answered your questions and is helpful to you. If you are satisfied kindly close the query and write a review as well. Wish you good health and faster recovery. Regards
