Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: I accidentally took 5mg norethisterone for 2 days while being 4 and a half weeks pregnant. I was supposed to take frolic acid. Does it have any adverse side effects and will it result in miscarriage?

Brief Answer:
It may not harm your baby.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us.

Norethisterone is a synthetic progesterone and is contraindicated during pregnancy.

It can cause fetal congenital anomalies and virilisation in female fetuses.
It can cause miscarriage also.

In your case as you had a very small quantity for a very short period may be it will not harmful to the fetus.

You should inform to your treating doctor for the same and she can do an ultrasound to rule out any congenital anomalies in the future.

Please do not worry!
Enjoy safe and happy motherhood.

Hope I have answered your query if you have further questions I will be happy to help you.

Good luck.
Regards
Dr.Richa
