Can Untreated Streptococcus Infection Lead To Nystagmus?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Jan 2017
Question: Can an untreated Strep or Staph infection cause Nystagmus or Square Wave Jerk eye movements ? I am 46 years old, female, blood tests show all good except somewhat low vitamin D deficiency. Doctors can't figure it out, scheduling an MRI after seeing a Neuro Opthamologist. although he felt like I might not need it . continued eye movements have been happening for 2 to 3 weeks . I raise two out of four grand babies, and two of them seem to have strep. one was diagnosed with strep throat a few days ago. the other had a terrible swollen and red thumb and irritated rash near bottom. they are on antibiotocs. I wondered if I should try antibiotocs ? that possibly it could somehow be related?

Brief Answer:
it is unlikely nystagmus is due to Strep. of Staff. infections- Need MRI

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

Nystagmus is generally a neurological sign and when present neurological causes of it have to be ruled out.

It is good you had a visit with a neurophthalmologist and been scheduled for an MRI. I think the MRI will be very helpful to visualize brain structures and make sure they are well.

It is almost unlikely that the nystagmus you have is related to streptococcal or staphylococal infection. First of all you would have developed specific symptoms as your grandchildren have developed and secondly Streptococal and Staphylococcal infections do not cause neurological signs like nystagmus.

I do not think antibiotics will help with the nistagmus as there is no causative relation of the nystagmus with the infections.

So my recommendations are that you have the MRI done and also have a consultation with a neurologicst, he might be asking of some other tests to try to figure out the cause of nystagmus in you.

I hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you.

I wish you quick improvement.

Kind regards,

Dr Antoneta Zotaj
