Can Traumatic Injury Lead To Numbness And Tingling Sensation In The Body?

Question: I was absolutely pain free, very active. I am or was at the time a Pilates instructor, certified spin instructor, which I would spin 4-5 hours a week prior. And I am a certified personal trainer. On 7/29/15 I was rear ended at a high rate of speed while I was at a complete stop. Both cars totaled. Well I have never recovered after 5 months PT, dry needling, trigger point injections and numerous visits from my Primary to Neurologist. I have numbness, tingling and burning on my right side always without meds, slightly with meds, I occasionally it is on my left side of I do what I consider a simply activity. The worst is that it is always in my mouth, lips and sometime the right side of my face and travels to my left side. I have 4 blushing disks, arthritis, and a bone spur. One Dr said I have had this for a long time and the accident aggravated it, said he just didn't know why I had the symptoms and that I should not have them. I left his office miserable and he said "I don't know, you gave me something to think about, see you in about a month." The next one said there in nothing I can do but send you back to pain management and PT. I am totally frustrated. How could I have had this prior to 7/29/15 and not know, is it possible. I am 53 and expect arthritis, but everything else. I teach Pilates , and practiced it almost daily, and preach cervical and spine safety. Never had pain in my neck except for a crick from sleeping wrong. I would like your opinion. Do I have to live this way forever, always taking pain meds to get through a day and having epidural injections in my neck?

Brief Answer:
Imaging studies and spine Surgeon opinion are needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

It is possible to have minor spinal changes from arthritis with no symptoms.

It is also true that symptoms in such cases may start after traumatic events like yours.

In these cases nerves and spinal cord are more susceptible to damage.

Symptoms you describe respond to neural structures involvement such cervical spinal nerves and cord.

Besides treatments you mentioned above that failed to improve your condition, I think a MRI of cervical spine, dynamic x-rays (flexed and extended position) and an opinion from a spine Surgeon or Neurosurgeon it is necessary in your case.

If you already done the MRI and x-rays, please upload the reports, or images, in order to understand better your condition.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.
