Brief Answer:
It is due to alteration in body composition...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Humira stands for the generic name of Adalimumab. This is an injectable protein, a synthetic antibody. Its main effect is to block the effects of TNF (tumor-necrosis-factor) which is promoted during inflammation.

Thus, the main effect of it is reduction of inflammation and its consequences to the joints.
It is also considered as a "disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug" as it prevents/slows destruction of joints.

With regards to its effect on causing weight gain, there are many debates on this argument as it is a very rare side effect of Humira.

I have come across studies reporting weight gain as side effect of using Humira. None of my patients who are using Humira (they are few in fact, I admit it), have reported such side effects.

Anyway, this was explained by the fact that inflammation is a catabolic state. In other words, if inflammation is standing for long periods of time, it will cause alternation in body composition (with lean body mass, while fat mass is untouched). This is called cahexia.

When inflammation is totally suppressed, these body alterations will be reversed. In other words, it will be associated with increased anabolic (building) phase. This will result in weight gain.

Hope it helped! Let me know if you have further queries!

Brief Answer:
Should run further diagnostic tests first...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Usually, Humira is causing generalized weight gain and not only localized in the legs.

If your legs are the only part of your body which is swollen, then, if I was your caring doctor would run further examinations to determine the right cause:
- urine analysis to check for protein and kidney problems
- ECG and cardiac echo to rule out cardiac problems
- liver/kidney function test
- measure blood electrolytes level

Depending on the tests results, further treatment will be prescribed.
If everything is ok, then, can conclude for Humira side effect.
All the best!

After 5 months, shouldn't the Humira have helped with the inflammation in my knee by now? It's done a great job getting rid of my psoriasis during the beginning but know I have a few patches on my elbows again.

Brief Answer:
Psoriasis is a chronic disease....

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for following up.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammation of skin characterized by alternating periods of getting better and worse. I am happy that Humira has helped you getting rid of psoriasis since the beginning.

However, as mentioned earlier, this is a chronic disease. The most important thing is to prevent the devastating symptoms. In other words, although you might have a few patches on your elbows again, I believe that they are not as severe as in the beginning.

Hope it helped!
