Can Genital Herpes Cause Neuralgia?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jul 2015
Question: I have been suffering with an HSV2 outbreak since April. I don't really know if it is the same outbreak because it went away for about a week then came back even worse. I contracted the virus from my ex-husband over 25 years ago and have never had outbreaks for the past 20+ years, until now. You have answered a couple of my questions about this, but I am so distraught and I have so many more questions, just trying to get some peace of mind about this. I have been taking 3000 mg of Valtrex for nearly a week now, and just upped it to 4000 yesterday. I have no lesions on my genitals but still feel a little general pain down there. Only one lingering place near my tailbone. I also have a rash on several areas of my body, including my face, but that seems to be going away. Not sure if it was from the herpes or the Valtrex. But even though I feel better and don't have any lesions, I am still feeling pain in my sides and my groin area, as well as my buttocks and lower back. Is it possible to still have nerve pain after the outbreak is over? If so, am I still highly contagious if I am having pain like this, with no lesions?

Brief Answer:
Neuralgia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome back.
Relax, there is nothing to worry and a high dose of Valtrex with the risk of side effects is not warranted.
You have a neuralgia and not an infected lesion now.
You may take Neurontin 300 mg or Lyrica 75 mg at bed time to help you get over the pain.
Since your outbreak is successfully treated, the virus is in a dormant state and you are not highly contagious. However if you are sexually active, safe sex practice of using a condom is advisable to prevent infecting your partner.
