Can Boxing Lead To Lesions In The White Matter?

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Mar 2019
Question: I received an MRI after having new onset headaches for about a week. My report showed multiple small T2 weighted white matter Hypertensities 1-3mm in size. I'm 41 years old and have no obvious symptoms of any disorder nuerologically or otherwise. I hear this is a relatively common nonspecific finding but am concerned. Is this "normal" given my age to have some of these or should I be concerned about some type of pathology?

Radiologist indicated peripheral pattern not typical of primary Mylen disorder like MS. I have been diagnosed with mild obsessive compulsive disorder, have taken ssri's and have had a history of competitive boxing with head contacts for over a decade.

Do I need to worry about this and if so what about?

Brief Answer:

Get evaluated as advised

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The MRI report is most likely non specific. You should get blood pressure measured.

Blood investigations like blood sugar, vitamin B 12, thyroid profile, liver function tests and renal function tests can be done.
Nothing to worry about.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Metabolic panel done 1 month prior was normal and my esr was 2. Blood pressure normal. I have been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder and have taken ssris for the past 3 months could this do it? Could these be normal age related changes at my age? I was also a boxer many years, the leasions are in the deep white matter. B12 was 565 in October 2017 and 398 (different lab) XXXXXXX 2018. See any causes in these factors? Thank you dr

Is there any data on prevalence in a healthy 40 something population? Have you seen these findings in my age group (healthy) personally ? Thank you dr

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Head injury due to boxing can also lead to such changes in MRI.
These changes are less common at this age but size and extent is important. Review of images is required.

Hope I have answered your query.
