Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: I am 82 years old and taking furosemid E40 mg and metoprolol succinate er 24 hr 50 mg. I was taking Virtus potassium chloride powder 20 mg eq twice a day. As this chloride has artificial color and flavors I have started to take NOW potassium chloride at 1/4 teaspoon twice a day. I would like to know if my magnesium balance can be affected by the change. I just started on the new one yesterday. XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
No it has no big effect on the Magnesium balance.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

As you are taking diuretics (water pill) you are already losing your salts by excreting in the urine. Potassium is already being lost in this way.

If you take Potassium chloride there will be no extra positively charged ions (cations) increase in the body. Problem was if you had added some extra positive ions in blood, and that may have caused magnesium to get disturbed because magnesium is also a positively charged molecule.

In short You will not have any electrolyte disturbance if you take this potassium chloride.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns. I will be happy to get back to you shortly. If satisfied here, please give a five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.

Regards!
