Can HIV Be Contracted Through Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Apr 2016
Question: Hello Doctor,
Two weeks ago I was in a business trip to Shanghai and one night I took a prostitute from Vietnam back to my hotel room. She put a condom on and we started with oral sex. After a while we switch to normal sex but for some reason after 10or 20 seconds it didn't feel right and we went back to oral sex. I finished in her mouth and she realised thee condom was broken. After she left I did a water test and I found a 2 to 3 mm hole, I don't know if it was there the whole time or when it happens.
Now I am worried sick that I was exposed to an std. I did a test for gonorhea and chlamydia and I amwIting for results but I am afraid about HIV.
Do you think I should be worried and can I have unprotected sex with my wife?
Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
testing is required

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

although the chances of having acquired HIV this way are very low (less than 1%) you should be tested because of the broken condom. 2 weeks time is the lowest possible time for a positive test but it's not a safe one if it's negative. Repeating the test would be wise. Try to avoid having unprotected sex or expose your partner to a potential infection until then.

The antibody tests that are usually used as a screening test may become positive only after 2-4 weeks have passed and may even take up to 3-6 months to get positive. p24 antigen can be detected sooner and there are other more expensive tests like HIV DNA PCR and virus load which provide more accuracy.

Kind Regards!
