Brief Answer:
Diabetic neuropathy...

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I have gone through your query and I understand your concerns.

Allopurinol can cause Peripheral Neuropathy, but in rare cases.
But in your case it is caused by type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes mellitus damages blood vessels that supply blood to nerves. When these blood vessels are damaged then Peripheral Neuropathy is appeared.

To manage Peripheral neuropathy you should keep your blood sugar levels under control.

To treat peripheral neuropathy Lyrica (Pregabalin) recommended. But you should consult your neurologist for the dosages, because the dosage is determined by disease condition.

You should consult your neurologist for the treatment.

Ask me for anything unclear.

All the best.

I am on Nupentin (Gabapentin ) .Is that the same as Pregabalin?
I was afraid that you would pick Diabetes as the cause of my neuropathy- despite the huge time difference in the date of onset of symptoms +/-25 years?
Opinion please.XXXX(Paediatrician-retired)

Brief Answer:
Nupentin and Lyrica are from the same group...

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for writing back.

Gabapentin(Nupentin) and Pregabalin(Lyrica) are two medicines from the same medical group.
Both these medicines are used to treat neuropathy, but Pregabalin(Lyrica) has better effects than Gabapentin. However you should consult your neurologist because it is your treating doctor who determines the treatment.

In general Peripheral Neuropathy is idiopatic(cause is not known) or Diabetic. And in the most common cases it is caused by Diabetes. We can't say that in your case neuropathy is caused by Allopurinol, because this happens in very rare cases.

If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wish you good health.
