Posted on Wed, 15 Jun 2016
Question: I have been having signs of Diabetes such as Anxiety, occasional blurred vision, excessive nighttime thirst and getting up for the bathroom several times a night. I am a 45 year old male and not overweight although have been quite sedentary for the last 8 months due to working from home.
I am going for blood tests next week but in the mean time i bought a glucose monitor and the results were as follows.

Fast 5.5
One hour after eating lunch 8.9
Two hours after eating lunch 8.2
Four hours after eating lunch 6.2

I think these seem high and not going down very quickly however my doctor says these are all in range. I would be grateful for any advice

Brief Answer:
Glucose levels

Detailed Answer:
They are certainly not alarmingly in the short term.

I recommend doing a test called HbA1c. It does not require fasting and can be done at any time of the day.
It gives the average glucose reading over the preceding 3 months.

This test will indicate whether your blood glucose levels are normal or elevated above the normal range. In the latter case, it will give yo a fair idea whether you have diabetes or pre diabetes.

The glucose monitor you used is helpful but not accurate. Even the HbA1c is not 100% accurate but still preferred over the glucose monitor.

The gold standard test is the 75 gram Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. (OGTT). You may wish to request your doctor to consider prescribing it

Thank you for your reply. I am having the HbA1c although I am concerned that my symptoms have only come on recently so maybe nothing would show up.

Is there any other reason high glucose levels could be present which would be unrelated to Diabetes?
