Posted on Fri, 12 Feb 2016
Question: I have had a cold since 26th Dec, was getting better but then on Monday I felt like I had flu, hot and cold sweats etc and can't swallow without pain on the left side of my throat and my glands are up on the left side, do you think it's tonsillitis and do I need to see a doctor or will my body fight this by itself?

Brief Answer:
Salt water gargling, lozenges, Ibuprofen

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome.
I have gone through your query.
It is difficult to say whether it is tonsillitis or not without examination. It would be better to see doctor for examination and to confirm the diagnosis.
As you have mentioned that you had cold, it might be upper respiratory tract infection. Most of these illness will be viral in nature and require only symptomatic treatment.

Is there a tonsilar swelling which is visible to you? Is there any congestion? If possibly upload the picture for better assessment.

Presently I would suggest you to drink plenty of water especially warm water. Warm Salt water gargling 3 to 4 times a day. Eat smooth foods, such as flavored gelatins, ice cream. Suck lozenges like strepsils or cofsil 3 to four times a day. Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen ( 500 mg twice daily) or ibuprofen for 3 days. Requirement of antibiotic course can be decided on examination for which you need to visit doctor.

If the symptoms persist after 3 days or worsens, I would suggest you to see ENT specialist.

This provisional advice provided by me is based entirely on the input provided to me. I would suggest examination by the doctor.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
