Suggest Medication For Ascites

My Dad was diagnosed with AML in December. He is getting a light form of chemo monthly. He now is experiencing extreme discomfort due to ascites. He was scheduled to have the fluid removed, but the radiologist indicated he would not due the procedure due to his low platelet count and they would not give him a platelet transfusion unless it was a life-threatening emergency. What is the outcome of a patient in this case and isn t the extreme discomfort, inability to eat and sleep, and shortness of breath a life-threatening emergency? I think he s going to starve to death. He s gone from 175 lbs. to 140 lbs. in two years.

Hello

Thank you for trusting HCM

Dear AML commonly presents with extramedullary involvement including of the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, lungs, eyes, gingiva, skin, and central nervous system. liver involvement may cause hypoproteinemia, increased portal pressure present with ascites.

Thrombocytopenia may be not a definite cause for ascites. severe thrombocytopenia may lead to intra abdominal bleed or ascites formation.

If it is tense ascites means need therapeutic tapping and albumin infusion. also check for proteins in ascitic fluid.

After pressure relieved then you may feed him. Please consult your oncologist/Gastroentrologist they will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care
