Paraphimosis is a condition in which the foreskin once pulled back behind the glans cannot be brought down to the original position. It is an uncommon condition and occurs less often than Phimosis.

It is serious condition which can happen in men and boys who have not undergone circumcision. It causes painful swelling of the  retracted for skin foreskin of the penis.

Causes of paraphimosis

  • It can occur after retraction of the foreskin for long hours during penile examaintion, cleaning, urethral catheterization or cystoscopy
  • It can also occur during penile ring piercing.
  • It can also occur secondary to erections.
  • Infection due to poor personal hygiene.
  • Trauma to the area.

Signs and symptoms of paraphimosis

  • Penile pain.
  • Enlargement of glans penis.
  • Congested with collar of edematous foreskin
  • In children it can cause urinary obstruction.

Treatment of paraphimosis

  • Pressing on (compression of) the head of penis while pushing the foreskin forward may reduce the swelling due to Paraphimosis. If it fails, surgical circumcision will be needed.
  • Injection of hyaluronidase in to the edematous prepuce is effective in reducing the edema and allowing the fore skin to get reduced.
  • Surgery

Complications of Paraphimosis

  • Damage to the penis tip.
  • Gangrene.
  • Amputation of the penis tip.
  • Recurrence of Paraphimosis is common. It is prevented by doing circumcision.
